New to miniature painting? Or want to pick up some fresh tips and skills? New this year, SoonerCon is offering miniature painting workshops taught by veteran painters.

Due to space limitations and materials, these workshops have an additional fee.

Intro to Miniature Painting Workshop – $5 entry fee

Saturday, June 8, 2019 10:00 a.m. | Location: Oklahoma A1

Sunday, June 9, 2019 11:00 a.m. | Location: Oklahoma A1

This beginner-level workshop teaches the basic skill set necessary to paint most miniatures. Students will be taught how to inspect miniatures for flaws, correct them, and prime for paint. Techniques taught will include paint thinning, washes, and dry brushing. At the end of the workshop, students should feel confident in their ability to paint a miniature up to a tabletop quality level. (2 hours) Limit 15 participants, $5 materials fee.

Advanced Miniature Painting Workshop – $10 entry fee

Saturday, June 8, 2019 2:00 p.m. | Location: Crimson Meeting Room

Sunday, June 9, 2019 2:00 p.m. | Location: Crimson Meeting Room

This advanced-level workshop focuses on teaching skills for more experienced painters. Students will develop and improve their brush techniques such as glazing, wet blending, edge highlighting, and two-brush blending. Expert painters teach basic color theory, lighting, and shading, and also instruct students in the usage of a wet palette as a tool for miniature painting. (2 hours) Limit 15 participants, $10 materials fee.

Miniatures Painting Competition

Prize Categories:

  • Best Single Figure – Up to 35mm tall
  • Best Large Figure – 35mm or taller
  • Mecha
  • Best in Show

Judging/Scoring Criteria:

  • Brush Control (accuracy of brush strokes and paint application)
  • Color Palette (appropriate use of colors for style of miniature you have entered)
  • Use of Advanced Techniques (blending, basing, conversion, etc.)

Registration Requirements:

Bring your contest entries to the Art Show and ask for the signup sheet.

  • All participants must have a SoonerCon 28 membership (weekend or Saturday and Sunday).
  • All participants must have their pieces registered and on display in the Art Show before Saturday, June 8 at 5 p.m.
  • Judging will take place Saturday evening.
  • All participants must pick up their miniatures from the Art Show before 2 p.m. Sunday, June 9th.

Prizes:

Prizes are provided by Game HQ and Reaper Miniatures and will be based on the number of entrants.

Additional Info: Staff of SoonerCon, Game HQ, and competition judges, may show their pieces in the competition, but are ineligible to win prizes.

Paint & Take

Reaper Miniatures and CAV: strike Operatyions are hosting free Paint and Take in the SoonerCon game room. Take a seat, grab a blank miniature figure and brush, and begin painting. You can take your mini home with you for free!

Speed Paint Competition

In our Speed Paint Competition, competitors each have 45 minutes to complete a figure provided. How detailed can you get? Winners can move on to further competition with prizes awarded in the final event Saturday.

Speed Paint happens at the following times in the game room on Saturday, June 8:
11 AM, 1 PM, 3 PM, and 5 PM Final Round

Sophie Says

With Sophie Says you have 45 minutes to paint a miniature, but you have to do it as “Sophie Says.” You may have to stand up or use only green or paint the figure of the person to your left. There’s no telling what Sophie might say!

Sophie Says happens at the following times in the Game Room on Saturday, June 8:
12 PM, 2 PM, and 4 PM
