Panelist Guest / Writer
David Carrico made his first professional sf sale to the Grantville Gazette e-zine in 2004. His stories have also appeared in the Grantville Gazette and Ring of Fire anthologies from Baen Books and in Jim Baen’s Universe e-zine. Baen Books has published a story collection by David, 1635: Music and Murder, and two novels written in collaboration with Eric Flint: 1636: The Devil’s Opera, and The Span of Empire. The latter was nominated for the 2017 Dragon Award for Best Military SF or Fantasy novel. David is currently working on a solo project. His newest book, 1636: The Flight of the Nightingale, will be published by Baen Books in late 2019.

Panelists discuss writing a many-layered epic, whether science fiction or fantasy. What makes a story epic? What does it mean to think outside the Tolkien box? How do you pick POV? How many characters are too many? What elements have proven most challenging or most useful? Is epic still meaningful in the modern world?

We all have trouble elucidating our thoughts at times. So how can writers do it for two or three (or more!) main characters and dozens of supporting characters? How can you encourage the reader to hear the voices in your head the same way you do? How do you write for a political view with which you may disagree, or a gender with which you don’t identify?

Military SF is an ever-evolving genre because the tools of war and social mores change. With the rise of private military companies, and the ability of the extremely wealthy to purchase private armies, it often feels like the real world is coming closer to military SF. But military SF's core is the sense of a team, which has not changed since spears and swords. Our panelists talk about the intersection of technology, fiction, and military culture.
